First Look at Sony’s New Action Camera

| July 10, 2012 |

There are a few companies that exclusively produce action sports cameras, we looked at GoPro’s Hero2 offering a while back. Other top companies include Contour and Drift, both have excellent action camera offerings.

Some of the big electronics manufacturers are starting to get in on the action, JVC have already announced their ADIXXION action camera, due for release at the end of the summer, priced at $349.95.

Sony has been making video cameras since the 1980’s, they are now looking to join the action camera party, we have some early photos of their first action camera via the Sony blog.

This nameless offering from Sony has barrel styling similar to the Contour camera. Sony have not detailed the full specs, we do know it will feature SteadyShot technology, certainly a handy feature on this type of camera. We would expect the quality to be nothing less than 1080p.

We do have a glimpse of the hardware; they will be using a Carl Zeiss Tessar ultra-wide lens; and a Exmor R CMOS image sensor. Much like the cams currently available, the Sony will have waterproof housing and a selection of mounts.

Sony have not indicated when the camera will be launched, they will be posting updates on their blog.
