Rugged Waterproof Digital Camera, Panasonic Lumix TS20

| February 7, 2012 |

Traditionally, ruggedness has not been amongst the most important attributes associated with electronic gadgets. In fact, most electronic devices have been quite fragile. Increasingly, however, manufacturers of mobile phones and digital cameras are positioning their products as being especially rugged and designed to survive more than the average knock or fall.

The Panasonic Lumix TS20 is a “rugged digital camera”. It is dustproof and shockproof. It is also waterproof in the sense that you can actually use it to take pictures underwater. As a matter of fact, the Lumix TS 20 is said to be waterproof for up to 5 metres of depth underwater- but only sea water or fresh water.

This camera has reportedly withstood drops from heights of up to 1.5 metres in test conditions. So if this camera slips from your hands when you’re taking a routine photograph, it is not likely to get damaged. But I don’t recommend dropping it to find out how much “shock” it can safely withstand.

If you fancy taking pictures in freezing weather, the TS20 is good for temperatures of up to 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

But lest you think the TS0 is only about ruggedness, it has a 16.2 megapixel sensor which can give you very high resolution photographs. It has an 8x digital zoom. Want to record video? No problem. The TS20 lets you record in HD (720 p) and allows you a 4x digital zoom. This camera comes with a 2.7 inch LCD display screen.

The TS20 is expected to be available in a couple of weeks, and is priced at $180 (£130).
