Atari Flashback 3, Retro Gaming at its Best

| December 1, 2011 | Comments

At least some of you will remember life before console-based games. And more of you will probably remember games like Atari Flashback 1 and Flashback 2 and the thrill of using a joystick to move your cars around or dodging missiles. If touchscreen based games don’t quite do it for you or you want to prove to your children that console-based games are better than “Angry Birds”, the Atari Flashback 3 may be what you need.

Atari Flashback 1 and 2 were very popular games in their times. They were developed by Legacy Engineering and no doubt has millions of fans even today. The Atari Flashback 3 has not been developed by Legacy Engineering, although it has been licensed by Atari. It contains 60 games based on the Atari 2600 which means you’re getting 60 games for the price of one. That includes games like Asteroids, Adventure, Battlezone, Centipede, and Missile Command. The Atari Flashback 3 is priced at £40.

A word of caution is perhaps in order. Veteran gamers with far more arcade gaming experience than I will ever have appear to think that the Atari Flashback 3 does not look very sturdy or classy. The unit is reportedly made of rather flimsy-looking plastic. Also, in terms of the gaming experience itself, it does not deliver anything close to what you may recall from all those hours at arcades.

So while the Atari Flashback 3 will whisk you away into a world of nostalgia, you may be rudely brought down to earth by your children commenting on why games like “Angry Birds” are far superior to the games you keep talking about.
