Toshiba Portege Z830: First Look

Toshiba do like to churn out laptops! Their latest offering comes from the Ultrabook range and is a satellite model. The Toshiba Portege Z830 is the lightest Ultrabook that Toshiba have ever produced. Apart from being very shiny, thanks to its magnesium alloy casing, it isn’t the most special thing to look at.

Here’s the standard model’s spec; It comes complete with a 13.3-inch display, 1.4GHz Intel Core i3 processor, a 128GB solid-state drive (SSD), 4GB RAM and pre-installed 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

If you want to upgrade the laptop to Windows 7 Professional, you can for an extra $70. You get a standard range of USB sockets, HDMI and VGA output and an SD card socket too. For the secret in you, there’s a fingerprint scanner too.

There are a couple of snazzy little extras on display here too. If you want to use your F keys other abilities, pressing the function button will display a list of them on screen for you.

So you won’t have to bother even looking at the keyboard, this is a great added ability which could really speed up the process, as most of us don’t use these keys very often.

This may be lighter than a MacBook Air, but it has none of the charisma. If you’re looking for something with a bit more style, you may want to consider the Apple product over Toshiba here.

The Portege Z830 is on sale now, starting at $929 (£899).
