Remember Michael J Fox and the “Back to the future” movie trilogy? Now that I have you nostalgically walking down memory lane, do you also recall the car with gull wings that Professor Emmett L Brown converted into a time machine?

That car was a DeLorean DMC-12. Sadly, the original DeLorean Motor Company, founded by John DeLorean in 1975, went bankrupt in 1982. John was the designer behind many of GM’s biggest hits from the Pontiac stable- the Firebird, GTO Muscle car and the Grand Prix.

However, the DeLorean Motor Company exists in a new avatar, thanks to Texan entrepreneur Stephen Wynne. In association with Epic EV, the DeLorean Company has launched an electric DeLorean (DMCev). The electric motor generates 260 HP and is capable of powering the car from 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds.

The DMCev has a retro look with gull wing doors, a stainless steel body and rear-mounted engine. Full-leather upholstery, built-in GPS display and an iPhone dock are the modernistic elements.

It has a top speed of 125 mph and is believed to give you a range of 100 miles between charges. It’s clearly very fuel-efficient, as it is reported to cost just about £1.50 for 100 miles.

Plus there’s the advantage of it being less polluting than any car powered by petrol. Do keep your eye on the battery charge as it takes 3.5 hours to charge.

The DMCev is priced around $100,000 (£70,000), but won’t be available till 2013 so don’t lose sleep over it yet.
