Scary Halloween Door, Using Animatronics

With Halloween round the corner, it’s the season to be scary. Or at least start thinking of how you’re going to scare the daylights out of those poor unsuspecting trick-or-treaters. If you are willing to invest US$3500, you can get digital technology to become your partner in scaring. The animatronic door, available on Etsy, is something you may want to consider.

The concept is quite simple. There’s a door with signage that clearly states “do not enter”. For good measure, it also warns that entry is for “authorized personnel only”. But should any intrepid trick-or-treater disregard these signs, well, he was warned!

What happens is that through the small glass pane in the middle of the door, the trick-or-treater sees a mean looking man appear. Soon, he starts wielding an axe. The sound of metal connecting with door is clearly audible. Soon, the trick-or-treater can see the axe cutting through the door, assuming that s/he is still there, of course.

The entire concept is based on a 22 inch LCD panel that displays the HD graphics of the man and the axe. The sound comes from a special DVD that has DTMF tracks. These cue the pneumatics at just the right time, giving the impression of the door creaking, opening and so on.

Hi-Rez Designs, which offers this animatronic door, provides instructions if you’re a DIY kind of person. If you don’t have the inclination to assemble it, but do have the money to buy a ready-made door, just look for it out on Etsy. Happy Halloween, a few weeks in advance!

Here is a video showing the Animatronic Door in action.
